I downloaded an iso of Windows XP Professional from MSDN and would like to put it on, and install from, a USB flash drive.

I have been fiddling with this for a few days now and have finally caved, I need some assistance.

I have used several online “guides” so far and haven’t been successful.

The most recent guide ( http://dotnetwizard.net/hacks/how-to-bootinstall-vista-from-a-usb-flash-drive/ ) had the following instructions, and I followed them to the tee unless noted;

1. Plug the USB drive in

2. Open a command prompt window with administrator privileges.

3. Type diskpart and press enter

4. Now type list disk and press enter

5. In the command prompt window type select disk ### . (### is the number of the disk and in the above example it is 2, so it becomes select disk 2)

6. Type clean and press enter (make sure you got the correct disk in step 5 before doing this)

7. Type create partition primary and press enter

8. Type select partition 1 and press enter

9. Type active and press enter

10. To format the drive type format fs=fat32 and press enter (this will take some time)
NOTE: FOR STEP 10 I used “format fs=ntfs” to format it in ntfs instead of fat32.

11. Type assign and press enter. This will assign a drive letter to the usb, remember the letter as it will be needed later. In this example the assigned letter is L

12. Now type exit and press enter to exit diskpart.

For the following part I mounted my XP ISO using Daemon Tools Lite.

13. Insert your Vista DVD to the DVD ROM and remember it drive letterl. Mine is I

14. Open a command prompt (or if you didn’t close the one opened earlier use that) and type I:\boot\bootsect.exe /nt60 L: (Replace I: with your Vista installation disk drive letter and L: with the drive letter of your USB flash drive)

[Vista DVD ROM]:\BOOT\BOOTSECT.EXE /NT60 [USB FLASH DRIVE]:

NOTE: Here’s where it got sort of tricky for me. My ISO doesn’t have a folder named “boot” on it. So, being the resourceful fella that I am, I went and found bootsect.exe online. I used the same syntax as above and got the same results (Bootcode was successfully updated on….) as displayed in the screenshot on the guide’s site.

15. Close the command prompt window.

16. Go to your Vista installation disk select all files and copy them to the USB flash drive

NOTE: For step 16 instead of just copying/pasting the files I went to commant prompt and performed the following command; xcopy f:\*.* h: /eqf

F was my virtual CD and H was my USB.

Now, this should yield a bootable USB drive with my XP installation files on it, right? Haha.

Here’s the SUPER wacky part that completely blows my mind. Honestly, NO idea what’s causing this.

Alright so, I take this nice new bootable USB and pop it into my Vmware and tell the vmware bios to boot from usb and yada yada, guess what? It works.

So I’m all joyous and I safely remove my USB and plop it into my test rig. I set the bios to load from the usb and give it a second to load. Guess what? It errors out. The exact message is: BOOTMGR is missing (next line) Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart.

So at this point I’m thinking, “Well, perhaps that bootsect.exe I ran is like system specific. Maybe it will work on the machine I made it on.” I remove the USB from my test rig and plug it back in the original machine and restart it. I tell the bios to boot from USB first and give it a second to load. I get an error message identical to the one before (BOOTMGR is missing..),

So, that’s where I am. If anyone could help me here, through e-mail, or perhaps even direct me to a technical forum better suited for this type of problem I would be eternally grateful.

Thanks,
Nick
Thanks Bill I’ll definitely check that out and let you know how it works.
Used Linux Live USB Creator per Bill’s suggestion. When USB drive is inserted the error “Remove Disks or other media. Press any key to restart” is displayed. I’ll lurk the Lili forums and ask for help if need be.

Thanks, Bill
Trying out WinToFlash now, Bill. Thanks again!

I am thinking of buying Registry Mechanic 7 from PC Tools as it is one of the best tools that there is but it provides only a basic support for Vista(that’s what they say). Is there is a tool that has been deveolped to support Vista at all? A tool that is safe to use? Also reliable? What about Windows One Care online beta scanner from Microsoft itself? I need a final word here. Can anybody help me please? Registry Mechanic does not provide system restore option for Vista, that’s another worry. I have a choice between Registry Mechanic 7 and One Care online Scanner. Can anyone guide me here?

Using a text editor, revise the following pseudocode so that the main program relies on modules to perform all of the work (data input and processing) performed by the program.

1.      start

2.      declare variables

3.      print “Enter team name.”

4.      input teamName

5. print “Enter score from player 1.”

6.      input playerOne

7. print “Enter score from player 2.”

8.      input playerTwo

9. print “Enter score from player 3.”

10.  input playerThree

11. print “Enter score from player 4.”

12.   input playerFour

13.  compute teamTotal = playerOne + playerTwo + playerThree + playerFour

14.  compute teamAvg = teamTotal / 4

15.  print teamName

16.  print “Round Results”

17.  if teamAvg >= 250 then

18. print “Move on to bracket A finals”

19.  else

20.  if teamAvg >=200 then

21. print “Move on to bracket B finals”

22.  else

23.  print “Receive participation award”

24.  endif

I’ve used the sg tcp optimizer (http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php) in the hope that i might increase my speed but instead it ruined it by making it awefully slow. My speed used to be 500-700 kb but now its limited to 50kb. Also, while using the optimizer, i’ve been following a guide for it :

Connection speed: This should be set to your max download rate. So if you download at 256 kilobytes a second, it would be 2 Mbps.
Here is a list of speeds:

      128 KBps = 1 Mbps

      256 KBps = 2 Mbps

      512 KBps = 4 Mbps

      1 MBps = 8 Mbps

      2 MBps = 16 Mbps

The calculation to find your exact speed is you take your highest download speed you’ve ever reached and multiply it times 8(assuming it was in megabytes) and select the closest number on the slider. You can also use this site to help you with any bit/byte calculations. http://www.matisse.net/bitcalc/

Now, select your network adapter.
You’re MTU should be set as high as your ISP can give you, and you can find your MTU by using the MTU/Latency tab. The PPPoE setting will not be explained in this guide due to the rarity of use.

TCP Window Auto-Tuning should be set to disabled because windows tends to make it TOO large, and can cause some bandwidth slow down.

Congestion Control should be set to CTCP.

TCP Chimney is set by depending on your NIC. If you run a non-dedicated(attached to motherboard NIC) then this should be set to disabled. If you run a dedicated NIC like the Killer Xeno Pro or any other NIC attached via USB or PCI then set this to enabled.

Receive-Side Scaling State should be set by how many cores(CPU cores) you have. If you are running a Single core processor then this should be disabled, but if you run a dual, triple, quad, or hexa core then set this to enabled.

DCA should be left at Auto due to not many people knowing if their systems supports DCA(most multi-core systems do, you can test this on your own.)

NetDMA can be enabled to take advantage of Direct Memory Access.

TTL should be set to 64, but if you notice a loss of connection or increase disconnects set this to 128.

ECN should be disabled due to game instability ex. Battle Field Bad Company 2.

Windows Scaling heuristics should be disabled unless you want all these settings to be set back to default.

Checksum offloading is just like Chimney offload, non-dedicated = disabled and dedicated = enabled.

Windows Scaling should be ticked to allow website to use high TCP window sizes if the website supports it(helps with TCP window auto-tuning disabled)

Timestamps should be disabled to free up some bandwidth.

Now for the Advanced tab.

You can leave the IE optimizations alone or play with them if you want. Best to set them to your max connections per server. There is a site to help you find your max, but I forgot the link.

The host priorities should be set accordingly.

Local = 4
Host = 5
Dns = 6
Netbt = 7

SynAttackProtect should be set to disabled to stop any internet checks(can cause slow downs). Leave on if you feel paranoid about the internet.

TCP Max Data Retransmissions is best set to 7. I personally use a low value of 1 because I have a good computer and ISP.(no packet loss)

Large System Cache can be enabled if you have a lot of RAM(random access memory). If you have less than 4 gigs then leave this to disabled.

Size should be set accordingly:
Default = Good for average internet user.
Balanced = Average user with slight LAN use.
Optimized = Lots of LAN use(local file transfer) and heavy internet use like torrents.

QoS should be set to 0 AT ALL TIMES! This setting can heavily hurt your games if set above 1, due to it’s trying to control bandwidth.

Going to skip DNS errors because they are not needed to be changed,

Gaming tweaks:
TCP Ack Frequency is best left at default, though some users like it at 1, I’ve noticed that MW2 and internet browsing perform better at a value of 2.

TCP No Delay should be enabled to allow for instant transmission of TCP packets.

TCP Del Ack Ticks shouldn’t be messed with unless you don’t want TCP No Delay on.

Dynamic ports can be left alone. They are fine at default.

Is there anyway to return my speeds to normal? My computer specs: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU 6300 @ 1.86GHz, 2.00gb RAM
